Keyword optimization tool

Conventional wisdom is that to get your site ranking well on Google, you need to (among other things) optimize your web site or at least a page for a particular keyword or keyword phrase. But how do you decide which is the best keyword to go for? Let’s say you sell jewellery, would it be best to name your page and optimize for “custom jewellery”, “handmade jewellery” or “unique jewellery”? which of those phrases is searched for most and how do you find out?
