If you are a Firefox user and a web developer you will get a lot of use out of Firebug. With this addon “You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page.”
From the site:
Inspect and edit HTML
Firebug makes it simple to find HTML elements buried deep in the page. Once you’ve found what you’re looking for, Firebug gives you a wealth of information, and lets you edit the HTML live.
Before I get into the free fonts themselves I have to mention a very useful tool called What The Font. If I ever need to find out what font was used in a particular design I go straight here. For the record, I wish I did, but I have no association with this site whatsoever.
Upload a Jpeg image and Whatthefont will give you it’s best guesses as to what the font is. It usually gives you 4 to 10 good suggestions, which is useful if the original is out of your budget and you think you can get away with another more affordable font. Best of all, it also tends to be very accurate.
In the example above, it may not have gotten the exact font but it was close enough for my purposes and a lot faster than I would have been had I searched through my available fonts.
If you want to identify a font in ‘20 questions’ style, try Identifont which will ask you a series of questions about the font characters.
While all the fonts listed below this top section are free (check the license to be sure) You can’t always be assured of their quality and most only come in one flavour (No lowercase, no Italic, etc) If you want to be sure you are getting a good quality font that will behave as you expect it to, MyFonts.com is a great place to purchase professional fonts, as are Fonts.com, ITCFonts.com, Linotype.com and ITCFonts.com
